Hotel Pallas, Heritage hotel in Muonio, Finland
Hotel Pallas is an accommodation with around 130 rooms and a restaurant located at the Pallastunturi Ski Center in the heart of Finnish Lapland. The property sits within the Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park area and functions as a base for both winter sports and summer hiking.
The original functionalist building from 1938 was destroyed during World War II, and the current structure was built in 1948 by architect Jouko Ylihannu. The hotel later received designation as a Cultural Heritage Site of National Significance.
The log-built section shows architectural styles from Finland's reconstruction period and preserves post-war building traditions of the region. The design reflects local craftsmanship typical of rural Lapland communities.
The hotel is accessible year-round and provides easy access to skiing in winter and hiking trails in summer. Visitors should prepare for mountain conditions and bring appropriate clothing for the Arctic climate.
A kitchen fire in 2006 caused temporary closure, but renovations allowed the hotel to reopen while retaining its heritage status. This recovery demonstrates how distant locations in northern Europe preserve their historic buildings.
