Åbo Akademi University, Finnish university
Åbo Akademi University is a public university with campuses in Turku and Vaasa that serves about 7000 students, including approximately 1000 from other countries. The two compact campuses offer programs across arts, humanities, business, law, engineering, health sciences, and information technology.
The institution was founded in 1918 and began as a private establishment before becoming a public university in 1981. It was created to support the Swedish language and identity in Finland and to restore Turku as a university town.
The university is the only one in Finland that teaches primarily in Swedish, serving as an important anchor for the Swedish-speaking community. Students use the campus spaces as places to exchange ideas and collaborate, creating a living academic environment.
Both campuses are small and easily walkable, with services and activities nearby. Their location near the city centers makes it convenient to access museums, cafes, parks, and historical sites.
The university operates Vaasa övningsskola, a school where future teachers practice their skills, directly connecting teacher training with real classroom experience. This hands-on arrangement allows students to learn in authentic conditions.
