Velika Gorica

Velika Gorica is a town near Zagreb that spreads across a large area and serves as the center of the Turopolje region. The place hosts Franjo Tuđman Airport and several schools along with a university of applied sciences.

The settlement emerged in the 13th century as a parish center and later became an important location for the local community. Archaeological finds show that people inhabited this area as far back as the Stone Age.

A special group founded here in the 13th century had the right to govern their own territory and built small wooden chapels for this purpose. Today eleven of these old chapels still stand and show a rare example of this building style.
