Sveti Jure, Mountain summit in Makarska, Croatia
Sveti Jure is the highest summit of the Biokovo mountain range near Makarska on the Dalmatian coast of Croatia, reaching about 5,775 feet (1,760 m). From the top, the view stretches over the Adriatic Sea and the offshore islands, while the slope drops steeply and sharply toward the water below.
The Biokovo range took shape over millions of years through geological shifts that produced the limestone rock visible across the whole area. The chapel at the top was built and tended over the centuries by nearby communities who used it as a place of pilgrimage.
A small chapel dedicated to Saint George stands at the top and can be seen from far across the coast. Pilgrims visit it on certain feast days, and for many locals the climb is a yearly tradition rather than just a hike.
A paved road leads to the summit and is open to cars and bicycles, while several hiking trails offer different levels of effort for those who prefer to walk. Weather can shift fast at this height, so sturdy footwear, warm layers, and enough water are strongly advised no matter how you get there.
Biokovo is home to plant species found only on this mountain, having adapted over time to the rocky surface and the mix of Mediterranean and alpine conditions. Botanists travel specifically to study these plants, which grow low among the rocks on the open slopes.
