Grižane Castle

Grižane Castle is a stone castle ruin in the Vinodol region that sits on limestone terrain with uneven topography. The site features rectangular foundations and circular towers that align with the natural rock formations of the landscape.

The castle was built around 1300 by the Frankopan family, who held power and influence in this region. A major earthquake in 1323 caused severe damage to the structure and altered its appearance permanently.

The castle served as a focal point for the region over many centuries and still shapes how locals see their landscape. Its remains reflect medieval life in Vinodol and the bond between the people and their environment.

The ruins sit on elevated ground and are reachable on foot from the village of Grižane-Belgrad. The path is partially marked, and it is wise to wear sturdy shoes and take care when the ground is wet.

The walls merge so completely with the limestone cliffs that they are hard to distinguish from the natural rock. This blending with the stone was a clever building technique to strengthen the fortress.
