Velebit Nature Park

Velebit Nature Park stretches across Croatia's largest mountain range, showing deep canyons, limestone cliffs, and varied rock formations throughout its terrain. The landscape shifts between steep rock walls, green valleys, and barren highlands.

The Croatian government established this nature park in 1981 to protect the mountain's ecosystems and safeguard endangered animal species living there. This designation was an important step in shielding the region's diverse natural world from human pressures.

Traditional stone piles called mirila sit scattered across the mountainside, marking ancient burial places and showing how local communities honored their dead. These simple structures are woven into the landscape and reveal the customs of people who lived here for centuries.

Four hiking paths with different difficulty levels run through the park, requiring sturdy hiking boots and enough water to stay hydrated. These trails pass through varied landscapes, so you should plan plenty of time and bring proper gear.

The rare plant species Velebit degenija grows only on this mountain range and represents a key part of Croatia's natural diversity. This endemic plant draws botanists and shows why the place matters scientifically.
