Crnopac, Mountain summit in Gračac, Croatia.
Crnopac rises to 1404 meters as the highest peak of southeastern Velebit, dominating the landscape with steep slopes and prominent limestone cliffs. The mountain features exposed rock faces and varied elevations that create a visually distinct terrain.
For centuries, this peak served as a natural boundary between inland Croatia and coastal areas, influencing how people moved through and settled the region. Its position shaped trade routes and regional connections over time.
Local mountaineering clubs maintain hiking infrastructure and shelters on the slopes, reflecting how the region's people have long connected with this part of Velebit. The routes reveal a tradition of mountain access passed down through generations.
Access to the summit follows marked trails starting from Šimlašica parking area, with the main route spanning around 7 kilometers and requiring several hours of walking. Sturdy footwear and plenty of water are essential, as the path grows steep and can become slippery in wet conditions.
Beneath the summit lies an extensive network of underground caves connected to the Kita Gaćešina system, forming one of Croatia's largest cave complexes. This subterranean world remains largely unexplored by most visitors to the area.
