Cerovac caves

The Cerovac cave complex extends over 7 kilometers of passages, featuring three distinct caves filled with stalactites, stalagmites, and underground chambers.

Engineers discovered these caves in 1913 during the construction of the Zagreb-Split railroad, leading to their protection and naming after the nearby Cerovac station.

Archaeological excavations within the caves revealed numerous artifacts from the Iron Age, including ceramic vessels, bronze items, and Paleolithic human remains.

The caves maintain temperatures between 5 and 8 degrees Celsius throughout the year, requiring visitors to wear warm clothing and comfortable shoes during guided tours.

The caves contain Croatia's largest collection of cave bear remains, which make up 99 percent of all paleontological findings in the complex.
