Tulove grede, Mountain ridge in Zadar County, Croatia
Tulove grede is a mountain ridge within the Velebit range that stretches roughly one kilometer with steep limestone walls rising to about 1,120 meters. The rock formations have sharp, jagged contours that stand out dramatically against the sky.
The Majstorska road, designed by engineer Josip Kajetan Knežić, began construction from the southern side in 1827 near this location. This route was built to connect important areas within the region.
The southern slopes of Tulove grede served as filming locations for German Western movies based on Karl May's novels about Winnetou during the 1960s.
Visitors must stay on marked paths as the surrounding terrain contains unexploded ordnance that makes leaving the trail dangerous. Good hiking boots with grip and careful footing are essential for navigating the steep sections.
Hidden within the rock face is a natural spring of cold water that has been accessed for centuries by lowering a bucket on a long rope. This secret water source provided relief to people crossing the harsh mountain terrain.
