Maslenica Bridge, Steel deck arch bridge in Zadar County, Croatia
Maslenica Bridge is a steel deck arch bridge spanning the Novsko Ždrilo strait between two sections of the D8 road. The main arch rises 55 meters above sea level, allowing ships to pass underneath while supporting road traffic above.
The original bridge built in 1961 was destroyed during the 1991 war, temporarily replaced by a pontoon ferry system. The current steel arch structure was completed and opened to traffic in 2005.
The bridge represents a significant engineering achievement in Croatian infrastructure, demonstrating the country's commitment to rebuilding after the war period.
The bridge carries a main road with space to pull over and look at the sea from the sides. Driving across offers views of the coastline and passage below for fishing boats and small vessels.
The bridge's foundation sits on the seabed and incorporates seismic reinforcement to withstand earthquakes in the region. This engineering approach demonstrates how modern safety standards shape underwater construction.
