Starigrad Fortress

The stone fortress stands at 262 meters above sea level, featuring a square tower and thick limestone walls overlooking the Cetina River and Adriatic Sea.

During the Croatian-Ottoman wars of the 15th century, this fortification served as a defense structure against Ottoman forces advancing from occupied Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The fortress represents medieval Croatian military architecture with its two-level bailey design, barbican entrance, and strategic positioning above the Dalmatian coastline.

Visitors can reach the fortress through a 45-minute hike from Omiš center, choosing between a steep direct path or a longer, gentler route from Baučići village.

The fortress walls measure one meter in thickness and incorporate a system of retreating levels, allowing defenders to withdraw higher as lower sections fell under siege.
