Angyal-forrási Cave

Angyal-forrási Cave, Protected cave in Tata, Hungary.

Angyal-forrási Cave is a protected cave in Tata composed of conglomerate and sandstone rather than typical karst rock. The walls are covered in calcite deposits left by mineral-rich water flowing through the formation.

Archaeological excavations revealed nearly 5000 artifacts from the copper and bronze ages, showing the cave was heavily used by prehistoric people. This extensive collection of finds indicates the site held importance for ancient communities.

The cave's name, which translates to Angel Springs Cave, reflects the historical connection between local water sources and Hungarian naming traditions.

Access to the cave requires special permission from the Duna-Ipoly National Park Directorate as a protective measure. Visitors should arrange authorization in advance and follow all site regulations.

The cave walls are composed of gravel from the Pannonian period rather than the typical limestone found in classical cave formations. This unusual mix of different rock materials makes the geological structure of this location quite distinctive.
