Tata, Historical town in Komárom-Esztergom County, Hungary
Tata is a town in the Komárom-Esztergom region of northwestern Hungary. Its Renaissance castle sits beside a large artificial lake that forms the centerpiece of the town and offers space for walking and recreation.
The castle was first documented in 1221 and played an important role in defending the region during conflicts between Hungary and the Ottoman Empire. Between 1526 and 1685, the fortress experienced repeated attacks before the conflicts came to an end.
The Tatai Patara festival draws hundreds of history enthusiasts to the castle grounds each year to recreate the famous 1597 siege. Visitors witness the past come alive through costumed performances that show both military conflict and daily life from that era.
The Kuny Domonkos Museum inside the castle displays local artifacts and exhibitions spanning different historical periods of the region. A visit to the museum provides insights into the area's past through objects and displays that show how the place developed over centuries.
From November to March, thousands of wild geese from the Eurasian steppes use the Old Lake as a stopover and wintering ground. The lake becomes a vital habitat for these migrating birds during their long journey.
