Megyeri Bridge, Cable-stayed road bridge in northern Budapest and Dunakeszi, Hungary
Megyeri Bridge stretches over the Danube in the northern part of the city, linking Budapest with the neighboring town of Dunakeszi. Two slender pylons carry steel cables that hold a roadway above the main branch of the river, while additional sections cross smaller waterways.
The bridge opened in September 2008, after decades of debate about another northern crossing over the river. Construction cost around 63 billion forints and immediately relieved inner-city traffic on older crossings.
The name comes from two nearby neighborhoods, Káposztásmegyer and Békásmegyer, both located on the northern edge of the city. Commuters use the crossing every day as part of the orbital route that channels traffic around the capital.
The bridge forms part of the M0 motorway, which runs around the city, and has several lanes in both directions. Travelers crossing see hills on the western bank and flat land to the east on clear days.
The span over the main branch measures 300 meters (984 feet), while other sections cross side channels and a floodplain. Five separate segments combine to form the total length of nearly two kilometers (1.2 miles).
