Palotai-sziget, Nature reserve in Budapest District IV, Hungary
Palotai-sziget is a nature reserve in Budapest District IV that stretches along the Danube River with dense willow and alder forests forming a continuous wooded space. The reserve protects an ecosystem where numerous bird species and other animals live within the city's boundaries.
The area took its present form through dredging work in 2008 that occurred during modernization of a railway bridge. This work permanently transformed part of the peninsula into an island that remains separated from the city even when water levels are low.
This natural island functions as a place where urban residents can observe wildlife up close, with bird calls creating a soundtrack different from the busy city around it. The willow and alder forests feel separate from Budapest's streets, offering a moment of connection to the river and its ecosystem.
The easiest access is from Újpest-Városkapu metro station, where you can walk across a railway bridge, or take various bus routes from different parts of the city. The area is best explored on foot and has several pathways through the wooded sections.
The reserve is known for wild garlic that grows freely across the forest floor, setting it apart from other green spaces in Budapest. It also provides shelter for rare species like scarlet beetles that are seldom found elsewhere in the city.
