Dunazug Mountains, Mountain range in northern Hungary.
The Dunazug Mountains are a mountain range in northern Hungary made up of three connected sections: the Gerecse Mountains, the Pilis Mountains, and the Buda Hills. The slopes are mostly forested, with valleys cutting between the hills and small villages sitting in clearings across the range.
Since medieval times, the forests and rock of these mountains were used for logging and mining, which helped settlements grow across the region. These activities shaped where communities took root and how the landscape was gradually opened up.
On the slopes of the Dunazug Mountains, locals have grown grapes and fruit trees for generations, shaping the look of the land over time. Terraced plots and small orchards are still visible today across the lower hillsides, tended by people from nearby villages.
The range can be entered from several starting points spread across its three sections, and marked trails connect the main areas. Conditions change noticeably with the seasons, so sturdy footwear and layers are a good idea whenever you visit.
The name Dunazug means 'Danube corner' in Hungarian, referring to the sharp bend the river makes at the foot of the range. This bend is known as the Danube Knee and gave these mountains their name.
