Magasház, High-rise building in Pécs, Hungary.
Magasház was a residential tower in Pécs with 25 floors rising to about 80 meters, built from concrete and steel. It contained roughly 250 apartments spread across about 18,000 square meters and originally housed around 800 residents.
The building was constructed between 1974 and 1976 using Yugoslav IMS technology and started as a large residential complex. Structural problems led to evacuation in 1989, after which it eventually stood empty.
The building reflected how Hungarian planners in the 1970s preferred to build new residential towers rather than restore existing structures. It shaped the way people saw the city's skyline during that era.
The building was not accessible to visitors after 1989, as it was no longer inhabited. A reinforcement attempt in 2003 did not solve the underlying problems, and the structure was eventually demolished in 2016.
Despite a major reinforcement investment of 360 million Forint in 2003, the building could not be saved and became the largest abandoned structure in Central Europe. Its long period of emptiness until demolition in 2016 made it a symbol of decay in the urban landscape.
