Tamariska-domb Természetvédelmi Terület, Protected sand dune reserve in Csepel, Hungary
Tamariska-domb is a protected sand dune reserve on Csepel Island covering several hectares. The landscape consists of sandy hills with steppe grasslands where various plant and animal species live.
The area received national protection status in August 2012 through a government decree. This designation came after an earlier period when the site was temporarily protected.
The name comes from tamarisk shrubs that grow here and shape the local plant life. You can observe how vegetation has adapted to the sandy conditions as you walk through.
You can enter the area on marked trails designed to avoid damaging the sensitive plants and habitats. The best time to explore is in spring and autumn when temperatures are comfortable.
An underground military bunker from the interwar period lies hidden beneath the hill, revealing the site's military past. Though not open to the public today, it reminds visitors that this location served different purposes over time.
