Budapest Wholesale, Wholesale market in Budapest District IX, Hungary
Budapest Wholesale Market is a trading hub in District IX where vegetables, fruits, mushrooms, eggs, honey, canned goods, dairy products, and soft drinks are sold in bulk to businesses. The building features a concrete roof shell divided into 18 wide sections that cover the entire market floor.
The market was designed by architect Aladár Münnich and opened on November 18, 1932 in the presence of Hungarian regent Miklós Horthy. This opening marked an important moment for Budapest's commercial infrastructure.
Four sculptures decorate the office building, each showing a different trade: a farmer, fisherman, gardener, and market seller. These figures reflect the many professions that rely on the market.
The market operates early each day as wholesalers and retailers collect their goods. Visiting during early morning hours gives you the chance to see the market at its busiest and most active.
The building was constructed using the Zeiss-Dywidag method, an innovative engineering technique that allowed for a large open roof without interior columns. This approach was quite advanced for its time.
