Hungarian border barrier, Border barrier at Hungary-Serbia frontier, Hungary
This installation is a border work along Hungary's southern frontier with Serbia and consists of a steel fence with barbed wire stretching roughly 109 miles (175 kilometers) in length. The structure connects several sections of different construction and ranges from tight mesh wire to taller elements with concrete anchors.
Construction began in 2015 as a response to the increased movement of people through the Balkan route into the European Union. Further expansion work followed in the years after and extended the installation with additional sections at other border parts.
The name comes from Hungarian government documents and marks the physical dividing line between Hungary and Serbia. Along the fence you see warning signs in several languages and surveillance cameras mounted on tall poles.
The installation runs through open countryside where you can view it from public roads running parallel to the border line. Official border crossing points are spaced at longer intervals and provide the only legal passage options.
The construction combines technologies from military border systems with standard commercial fencing material and thus creates a mix of different security standards. At some points the structure runs through agricultural areas and separates fields and grazing zones.
