Lake Fehér

Lake Fehér is a saltwater lake in Hungary with water colored white and milky due to dissolved salt minerals suspended in it. The lake covers a large area and supports approximately 280 bird species that pass through or rest seasonally.

The lake appeared in written records from the 11th century, and for centuries the Tisza River regularly flooded the area, gradually shaping the body of water and its environment. These cycles of flooding created the habitat that exists there today.

The lake serves as a resting place for migratory birds that pass through the region seasonally, and visitors can observe their behavior from designated spots along the shore. This role as a natural stopover point makes it important to the birds' survival routes.

The best way to experience the lake is from designated observation platforms that offer clear views of the water and bird activity. Visiting during spring and fall migration seasons gives the best chance to see large numbers of birds gathering in one place.

During dry periods, the lake bottom produces white salt crystals that form delicate patterns visible to visitors walking near the shore. This natural phenomenon reveals how salt minerals concentrate in the water and creates a striking mineral landscape.
