Násznép Cave, Natural cave system in Kosd, Hungary
Násznép is a natural cave system in the Naszály mountain near Kosd, extending through three main chambers formed in limestone rock from the Triassic period. Its interior consists of passages and rooms of varying sizes, shaped over time by water and geological forces.
The cave was first officially documented in 1913 when researcher Ottokár Kadić published his findings about its geological and archaeological features. This early scientific study established the foundation for modern understanding of the site.
The name comes from local legends about wedding parties who once took shelter here during times of conflict. This story still shapes how people in the area think about and describe the place.
Access to the interior is restricted and requires permission from Duna-Ipoly National Park authorities before visiting. Plan a trip between late spring and early autumn when the cave is open to visitors, as it closes during winter months.
The second chamber contains significant deposits of guano left by bats that make the cave their winter home. This makes the cave an important shelter for several bat species seeking refuge from the cold months.
