Csővári No 1 Cave, Limestone cave in Csővár, Hungary

Csővári No 1 Cave is a limestone formation in Csővár featuring two entrances that lead into chambers arranged in stepped levels. The passage stretches roughly 19 meters and remains relatively shallow, with a height of around 1.4 meters and floors scattered with rock fragments and clay.

Excavations in the 1930s uncovered evidence of ancient human occupation and bones of prehistoric animals such as woolly rhinoceros. Scientific study of the formation resumed in the 1950s when members of the Budapest Vörös Meteor Climbing Club explored the natural features on Várhegy.

Archaeological excavations in 1931 revealed remains of ancient human habitation along with bones of prehistoric animals, including a woolly rhinoceros.

The entrance is easy to reach on the southern slope of the hill, and no specialized climbing gear is needed for entry. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes since floors are slippery in places due to clay and loose rock fragments.

The cave stands out for its soft limestone walls that erode easily and differ from harder rock formations found elsewhere. Unlike typical caves, it completely lacks stalactites and stalagmites, making it geologically unusual in the region.
