Fairy Rock, Protected cliff in Buda Hills, Hungary
Fairy Rock is a dolomite cliff formation rising from János Hill, offering views across multiple districts and the surrounding mountains. The rocks create natural terraces with clearly visible layers of stone.
The site was shaped by dolomite quarrying operations until 1977, when it gained protected status. This designation transformed it from an industrial extraction site into a preserved natural landmark.
The rock formation serves as a gathering spot where locals spend their free time enjoying the outdoors and sharing views of the city below. It reflects how Budapest residents value spending time in natural spaces near their homes.
The green triangle trail begins at the Libegő Chairlift lower station and leads upward through forest paths, taking around 30 minutes to reach the rocks. The route is clearly marked and suitable for most walkers.
The dolomite layers reveal multiple levels that offer different angles for viewing the city below. Visitors often miss that these natural terraces actually resulted from past quarrying activities.
