Waduk Gondang, reservoir in Indonesia
Waduk Gondang is a reservoir in eastern Java built to hold back the Gondang River, officially opened in 1987. The dam spans over 900 meters in length, stands about 27 meters tall, and covers roughly 6.6 hectares of water surface surrounded by rural fields and small villages.
Construction of Waduk Gondang began in 1976 and took about ten years to complete before its official opening by President Soeharto in 1987. The project was designed to provide irrigation water for farmers and to control flooding from the Gondang River during the rainy season.
Waduk Gondang takes its name from the Gondang River that flows through the area. The site has become a gathering place where local families spend leisure time, fishermen cast their lines, and residents connect with the water that sustains their agricultural way of life.
The reservoir is easily accessible by car, motorcycle, or bicycle from the town of Lamongan, less than 30 minutes from the city center. Visitors will find picnic areas, shaded spots by the shore, boat rentals for those interested in exploring the water, and fishing opportunities along the banks.
Within the grounds sits the grave of Dewi Sekardadu, also known as Mbok Rondo Gondang, a historical figure revered in the region. Discovered in the early 1900s and restored later, the site draws local visitors who come to pay respects to this significant local memory.
