Skellig Islands, Archipelago in County Kerry, Ireland.

The Skellig Islands are two remote rock formations located about 8 miles (13 kilometers) off the southwestern coast of Ireland, rising sharply from the Atlantic waters. The larger island features terraced plateaus and narrow ridges, while the smaller one remains entirely covered by seabird colonies without any human structures.

Christian monks established a settlement on the larger island during the sixth century and maintained their community there until the twelfth century in complete isolation. The monastic group eventually abandoned the site due to harsh living conditions and relocated to the mainland.

The name derives from the Irish word 'sceilig,' meaning rock or splinter, which describes the jagged silhouette these formations create against the horizon. Fishing communities along the Kerry coast have long used the islands as a landmark for navigation and as a measure of incoming weather patterns.

Boat trips to the islands operate only between May and September and depend heavily on weather conditions, meaning cancellations can happen at short notice. Visitors should wear warm, waterproof clothing and non-slip footwear, as the crossing can be rough and the island steps are steep and slippery.

The smaller island hosts one of Ireland's largest gannet colonies with roughly 30,000 breeding pairs, turning the rocks completely white during nesting season. Puffins nest on the larger island between April and August, digging their burrows into the grassy slopes near the old monastic cells.
