Bellevue House was an 18th-century country mansion in Delgany featuring extensive gardens and glasshouses throughout its grounds. The estate spread across 300 acres and commanded views over the Glen of the Downs toward the Irish Sea.
David La Touche, a Dublin banker, acquired the estate in 1753 and built Bellevue House between 1754 and 1756. This ambitious construction project demonstrated the financial power and influence of wealthy merchants during the 18th century.
The windows displayed stained glass artworks showing chemists at work and fishermen at night, reflecting the owner's interests and wealth. These decorative pieces offered visitors a glimpse into the intellectual and aesthetic values of the household.
The site of Bellevue House is now part of Delgany Golf Club, situated about 25 kilometers south of Dublin. Today the historical area can be accessed through the golf facility that incorporates the former estate grounds.
The property contained a 650-foot conservatory completed in 1793 housing specialized glasshouses for growing cherries, peaches, and grapes. This impressive horticultural structure represented an advanced approach to cultivating plants that required controlled environments.
