Universal Links on Human Rights, Memorial sculpture near Busáras, Dublin, Ireland
Universal Links on Human Rights is a metal sphere sculpture located on a traffic island near Dublin's central bus station. The artwork is constructed from welded interlocking chains and bars, with a flame burning at its core.
Amnesty International commissioned artist Tony O'Malley to create this memorial in 1995, with installation completed in 1996 near The Customs House. The project emerged from the organization's growing call for attention to imprisoned activists worldwide.
The sculpture serves as a focal point for reflection on freedom and justice, drawing visitors who pause to consider those imprisoned for their beliefs around the world.
The sculpture stands at the intersection of Amiens Street, Beresford Place, and Memorial Road, positioned on a traffic island near the bus station. It is easily reached on foot and accessible at any time without restrictions.
The flame at the center is powered by natural gas from Kinsale and burns continuously as a symbol of unending hope. This detail connects a distant energy source to a message of remembrance in the heart of the city.
