The church features a large nave, transepts, and a later-added chancel, designed by architect Joseph Welland with Gothic-style lancet windows throughout the structure.
The foundation stone was laid in 1836 following a special Act of Parliament, and the church was consecrated in 1843 to serve seafarers at Kingstown Harbour.
The structure transformed from a religious center for maritime communities into the National Maritime Museum of Ireland, preserving naval artifacts and history.
Located near Dún Laoghaire Dart Station, the building now houses maritime exhibitions and educational programs about Ireland's seafaring past.
Richard Brooke, the first chaplain, initially described the church as large, gaunt, and lofty, despite its capacity to accommodate 1,400 people.
