Archbold's Castle

Archbold's Castle is a three-story fortified structure in Dalkey with rubble masonry walls and lancet windows. The defensive stonework features a machicolation opening above the entrance, a characteristic element of medieval fortress design.

The castle was built around 1390 by merchants to protect their trading goods. It was one of seven fortified structures that once defended maritime commerce in the area.

The castle reflects the medieval trading culture that shaped Dalkey's identity. Visitors can see the defensive features that merchants built to protect their goods and business interests.

The castle is easily accessible on foot and sits near other historic structures in the surrounding area. Access is straightforward, and visitors should wear comfortable shoes to explore the neighborhood.

From 1890 to 1930, the castle served as the town hall and council meeting place for Dalkey's local government. This shows how a medieval merchant tower was later adapted for civic purposes.
