Loughcrew Demesne

Loughcrew Demesne is a large Neolithic burial ground with over thirty passage tombs spread across four hilltops in County Meath. The site reveals how early communities built stone chambers within earth mounds to create lasting sepulchral monuments.

The site was built during the fourth millennium BC when regional inhabitants constructed elaborate burial chambers within earthen mounds. Different hilltops likely served multiple generations as family and communal resting places.

The stone walls inside several tombs display intricate geometric patterns, including circles, lozenges, and leaf shapes. These carvings reveal how Neolithic people used art and craft to mark their burial places.

The site is accessible through marked walking paths across the hilltops with open views of the surrounding landscape. Some tombs require walking over uneven ground and rolling terrain to reach them.

The largest mound, known as Cairn T, is flooded with sunlight twice a year when the sun rises during spring and autumn equinoxes. This reveals the astronomical knowledge and building skills of Neolithic architects.
