Originally opened in 1983 by Peter Morphew as Clara-Lara Trout Farm and Funpark, the venue was designed to create a rural environment with minimal concrete development, emphasizing natural outdoor experiences over artificial structures.

The name combines the Vale of Clara with the nearby village of Laragh. Founder Peter Morphew set out to make the park "as far removed from Disneyland as possible", rural and rustic with no concrete at all. A 2006 Irish Times review gave it four stars out of five, praising the water slide and rowboats while noting its dependence on good weather.

The park opens on weekends in May and every day from June to August, so a visit outside those months may find it closed. It sits on the west bank of the Avonmore River, with the water slides and rowboats among the attractions most dependent on dry weather.
