Technion – Israel Institute of Technology

The Technion is a research institution in Haifa focusing on engineering, natural sciences, and medicine. The campus covers a large area on the outskirts of the city, with several hundred buildings spread across the grounds.

Founded in the early nineteen twenties, the institution began after debates about language led to a shift from German to Hebrew instruction. It later grew into a center for applied sciences in the eastern Mediterranean.

The name comes from the Greek word for craft and technology, reflecting the founding vision to spread technical education across the region. Today students from over eighty countries shape daily life on campus, working in laboratories that remain open around the clock.

The campus sits on a hillside outside the city center and can be reached by public transport. Visitor centers provide information about the grounds and different research areas.

Several faculty members have received awards in recent decades for work in chemistry and nanoscience. Some laboratories focus on projects combining medical diagnostics with materials research.
