Tomb of Nicanor, Ancient burial cave on Mount Scopus, Jerusalem, Israel
The burial complex contains two caves accessible through a rectangular courtyard, featuring multiple halls with designated spaces for remains storage.
The cave, discovered in 1902 by a groundskeeper, contained seven ossuaries including one with bilingual Hebrew and Greek inscriptions from first century CE.
Nicanor, from a wealthy Alexandrian family, gained recognition in ancient texts for his contribution of bronze doors to the Second Temple in Jerusalem.
The burial site combines architectural elements from different periods, with evidence of continuous usage through Byzantine times based on pottery findings.
The cave became a temporary national leaders burial ground in 1934 when Leon Pinsker and Menachem Ussishkin were interred within its chambers.
