Jerusalem Bird Observatory

The Jerusalem Bird Observatory occupies 5,000 square meters between the Knesset and Supreme Court buildings in central Jerusalem, offering multiple observation points for wildlife study.

The Society for the Protection of Nature in Israel founded this research station in 1994, establishing the first urban wildlife site in Israel under naturalist Amir Balaban.

The observatory functions as the national bird banding center where trained volunteers monitor and document hundreds of bird species during their migration periods.

The outdoor observation posts remain accessible at all hours without entry fees, while the Gutman Center opens from Sunday through Thursday between 9:00 and 15:00.

During migration seasons, staff members band approximately 200 birds daily, monitoring species like the Taiga flycatcher and Eyebrowed thrush along the Africa-Eurasia route.
