Dor, Agricultural community in Hof HaCarmel, Israel
Dor is a moshav on the Mediterranean coast of Israel, part of the Hof HaCarmel Regional Council. The settlement is made up of individual family farms spread across flat coastal land just above sea level.
Dor was founded in 1949, shortly after the establishment of the State of Israel, on land with a very long history of human settlement. The site had been a coastal harbor town in ancient times, occupied by different peoples across many centuries.
In Dor, each family works its own plot while sharing decisions about the community through a council elected by all members. This way of living gives the place a close-knit feel where neighbors depend on each other in practical ways.
The terrain is flat and easy to walk, with farms and houses close together, making it simple to get a sense of the place on foot. A beach nearby is also within easy reach for visitors who want to combine a stop here with time by the water.
Underwater surveys off the coast near Dor have found ancient shipwrecks, making it one of the richest sites for maritime archaeology in the eastern Mediterranean. Some of the vessels date back over 3,000 years, giving researchers a rare window into early sea trade routes.
