Gamla, An archaeological site in Israel
Gamla was an ancient city built on the Golan Heights on a steep hilltop, now preserved as an archaeological site with scattered ruins. The remains include stone walls, residential structures, and public buildings that are integrated into the rocky landscape.
The city was founded during the Hellenistic period and became an important Jewish settlement center during Roman times. It was destroyed during the First Jewish War.
The site is easily accessible for visitors on foot with paths through the archaeological remains. The terrain is open to explore, but sturdy footwear is recommended due to uneven surfaces and rocky ground.
The city was known for its defensive location and is sometimes described as one of the most heavily fortified Jewish cities of antiquity. The steep terrain and elevated position made it a natural refuge during troubled times.
