Kiryat Anavim Military Cemetery, Military cemetery and cenotaph in Kiryat Anavim, Israel.
Kiryat Anavim Military Cemetery is a military burial ground in Kiryat Anavim, Israel, set in a valley surrounded by hills and trees. The graves are arranged in neat rows along maintained paths, and the entrance is marked by a fig tree on the right side.
The cemetery was founded during the 1948 War of Independence to receive soldiers from the Harel Brigade, who fought to keep the routes to Jerusalem open. Many of those buried here came from the local kibbutz community.
The limestone monument in the eastern section was made by sculptor Menahem Shemi and features carved figures honoring the fallen. Visitors often see small stones placed on the graves, following a Jewish tradition of remembrance.
The site is easy to reach on foot and is best visited in dry weather, as the paths can become slippery after rain. Respectful clothing is recommended, as this is an active place of mourning and remembrance.
Most of the soldiers buried here were laid to rest within a single eleven-month period, which reflects how concentrated and costly the fighting was in this area. Some were members of the same kibbutz, meaning neighboring families mourned together.
