שמורת גאון הירדן, Nature reserve in Beit She'an Valley, Israel
Gaon HaJarden is a nature reserve in the Jordan Valley consisting of five separate protected zones along the river. The area contains dense forests, wetland ecosystems, and diverse habitats supporting various plant and animal communities.
The reserve developed gradually starting in the late 1960s when individual zones were first protected. It has since grown into an integrated conservation program that continues protecting the valley today.
The reserves grew from efforts by kibbutz communities to protect natural spaces while continuing their farming traditions. Today visitors can see how agricultural settlements and wildlife protection coexist in the same valley.
The reserve can be explored on well-maintained hiking trails that connect the five zones at varying difficulty levels. Visiting during cooler months provides the best experience, when trails are most accessible and wildlife viewing is most rewarding.
Large predators like wolves and wildcats live here in close proximity to kibbutz settlements, sharing the same land. This unusual arrangement shows that people and wild animals can coexist in the same valley without complete separation.
