מלון פנינת ירושלים, Hotel in Israel
Pearl of Jerusalem Hotel is a four-story building on Kikar Tzahal square, directly across from the Old City walls and along Jaffa Street. Completed in 1996, the structure combines glass and stone facades and once contained 120 rooms, with four underground levels beneath housing parking, event spaces, and a swimming pool.
The building was completed in 1996 after years of planning negotiations to respect Old City height restrictions. Under Dan Hotels management initially, it passed through multiple owners after 2003, experiencing closures and financial difficulties before permanent closure in 2008.
The hotel reflects Jerusalem's relationship with modern development in a historic setting. Its name evokes the idea of the city as a precious place worthy of care and attention from visitors.
The location on Kikar Tzahal square is central with direct views of the Old City walls and accessible via Jaffa Street. The building is currently closed and not open to visitors, but can be observed from the plaza as a landmark in the city landscape.
Architect Eldar Sharon designed the building with deliberate height restrictions that kept it slightly below the Old City walls to protect the historic skyline. This design principle reveals how modern structures in Jerusalem had to adapt to an ancient urban profile.
