Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem, Catholic patriarchate in Christian Quarter, Jerusalem, Israel
The Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem is a Catholic institution in the Christian Quarter of the Old City. Its jurisdiction covers Israel and the Palestinian territories as well as Jordan and Cyprus.
The first version of the institution appeared in 1099 after the crusaders took the city. Pope Pius IX restored the seat in 1847 and made it a permanent residence.
The Patriarch carries the title of Jerusalem and represents the Catholic Church in the Holy Land. This position connects religious leadership with care for Arab Christians in a region of divided traditions.
Visitors find the building in the Christian Quarter near the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Access is through narrow lanes between medieval walls and modern shops.
The Church of the Holy Sepulchre serves as the cathedral and is shared with other Christian communities. Different denominations celebrate their liturgies there daily in the same space at different times.
