Kal'at Al Mina, Medieval coastal fortification in Ashdod, Israel.
The rectangular fortress measures 35 by 55 meters with six to seven meter high walls and includes four corner towers and two semicircular gates.
The fortress originated during the Umayyad period under Caliph Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan in the late 7th century, incorporating materials from earlier Byzantine structures.
The site bears multiple names across languages, including Mahuz Azdud in Arabic, meaning harbor of Azdud, and Horbat Ashdod Yam in Hebrew.
The fortress location offered strategic advantages for defending the port against maritime attacks through a system of smoke signals and beacons.
Archaeological discoveries in 2017 revealed an ancient basilica containing evidence of female ministers and burial sites indicating a historical plague outbreak.
