Kadapa, Administrative center in YSR district, India
Kadapa is an administrative center in YSR district in southern Andhra Pradesh, India. The city sits about eight kilometers south of the Penna River between the Eastern and Western Ghats on black and red ferrous soil.
The region was under Mourya and Satavahana dynasties before passing through several other kingdoms. British forces took control and established a collectorate in 1800.
The name comes from the Telugu word 'gadapa', meaning threshold, as the city serves as a gateway to nearby hills. Today residents speak mainly Telugu and Urdu and follow Hindu and Islamic traditions in their daily life.
The central railway station connects the city to the Mumbai-Chennai line and offers regular train service. The commercial airport has provided additional travel options since opening in 2015.
The city sits near the Tirumala hills and actually functions as a passage to this important pilgrimage region. The terrain shows a mix of black and red soil typical of this region between the two mountain ranges.
