Mahadeo Hills

The Mahadeo Hills extend through Betul, Chhindwara, and Seoni districts, forming a natural barrier between the Narmada River and the Wainganga-Wardha river systems.

These sandstone formations emerged during the Carboniferous Period between 360 and 300 million years ago, shaping the current geological landscape of central India.

The hills contain multiple temples dedicated to Shiva and Parvati, with the Kal-Bhairav temple from the 17th century standing as a primary religious center.

The northern slopes support lumber production and charcoal burning activities, while the southern section drops sharply from 1,100 meters to 275 meters.

The hills feature natural caves, rock-cut sculptures, and ancient inscriptions, alongside holy water bodies called Kunds that local traditions associate with healing properties.
