Krishna district, District of India in Andhra Pradesh
Krishna is an administrative division in Andhra Pradesh that covers a coastal area along the Bay of Bengal. The region includes agricultural land, cities, and several smaller towns along the coast and inland.
British traders established a trading post in Machilipatnam in 1611, which served as their main base in the region for three decades. This port town was an early contact point between European seafarers and local rulers.
The Kuchipudi dance style, which began in one of the villages here, is still performed during temple festivals and public events. Artisans in smaller towns produce block-printed cotton fabrics using old techniques that visitors can watch in the workshops.
The region is accessible via several national highways and railway connections that link different towns. Coastal areas can be harder to reach during the monsoon season, while inland areas remain accessible throughout the year.
Some of the old cotton printing workshops in Machilipatnam still use wooden blocks and vegetable dyes that have been preserved across generations. These craft shops often open their doors to visitors, who can follow the entire printing process from the first pattern to the finished cloth.
