Tiruchirapalli Airport, International airport in Tiruchirappalli, India
Tiruchirapalli Airport is an international hub in Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu, serving both national and cross-border connections. The site covers roughly 400 hectares and includes two terminals, with the newer one holding ten boarding gates and forty-eight check-in desks.
The facility began operations in December 1936 when Tata Sons launched the first commercial airmail service between Madras and Colombo. During World War II, the site served as RAF Station Kajamalai, supporting Allied operations in South Asia.
The facility takes its name from Tiruchirappalli, locally known as Trichy, which serves as a major religious center in Tamil Nadu. Passengers move through waiting areas where large murals display local craftsmanship and traditional dances, offering a first impression of regional identity.
The site lies 5 kilometers (3 miles) south of the city center along National Highway 336, reachable by taxis, buses, and rental cars. Inside the terminal, duty-free shops, cafés, and waiting areas with seating accommodate travelers.
The newer terminal building follows GRIHA-4 environmental standards and uses solar power to cover part of its electricity needs. The facility can handle up to 4.45 million passengers annually, marking a significant increase in capacity compared to older installations.
