Gadag-Betageri, Twin cities in Karnataka
Gadag-Betageri is a town and district headquarters in the southern Indian state of Karnataka. The settlement spans multiple neighborhoods and is known for its stone temples featuring elaborate architectural details and for traditional handloom weaving practices including Kasuti embroidery.
The town emerged as a trading hub during the Chalukya period, particularly between the 11th and 12th centuries when elaborate stone temples were built. It is also associated with poet Kumara Vyasa, whose literary work Karnata Bharata Kathamanjari remains one of the most important texts in Kannada literature.
The name Gadag-Betageri reflects the merger of two areas that remain distinct neighborhoods today. Walking through the local markets and temple districts, you witness daily religious practices and see artisans still creating intricate Kasuti embroidery on traditional sarees and textiles.
The town is easily accessible by local buses and taxis, with main roads connecting to nearby cities like Dharwad. A railway station links it to other regions, and the nearest airport is located in Hubli, making it straightforward for visitors to arrive and explore the area.
The region was the birthplace of musician Puttaraj Gawai, a master of classical Indian music who preserved musical traditions through dedicated teaching. Modern cricketer Sunil Joshi also hails from here, reflecting how the town has nurtured talent across generations and different art forms.
