Kandla port, Major seaport in Kutch district, India
Kandla port is a seaport in Kutch district, India, that spreads across Kandla Creek, Tuna Tekra and Vadinar. The facility operates multiple berths for container ships and specialized terminals for liquid cargo along the northwestern coast.
The harbor opened in 1952 to serve western India's trade needs following independence. The government renamed the facility Deendayal Port in 2017 and developed it into the country's first Special Economic Zone.
The harbor sits in a linguistically diverse area where Gujarati, Hindi, Sindhi and Kutchi are spoken alongside each other. The population from different religious communities shapes daily life in the surrounding settlements.
Visitors should be aware this is an active commercial harbor with restricted public access. The three operating locations sit along the coast, and infrastructure is primarily geared toward cargo handling.
The facility began as India's first Special Economic Zone in 1965 and now processes over 130 million tonnes of cargo each year. The SAAGAR program gives ships priority when docking if they guarantee specific cargo volumes.
