Chikhaldara is a hill station at 1,188 meters elevation across the Satpura range with multiple lakes, waterfalls, and extensive green landscapes. The area spreads across forested terrain with water features and varied vegetation throughout.
Captain Robinson of the Hyderabad Regiment discovered this location in 1823 and noted its resemblance to English autumn landscapes. His discovery led to the area becoming established as a retreat in colonial times.
The name comes from Keechakadara, a reference to the Mahabharata story where Bheema defeated a demon in this region. This mythological link remains part of how locals understand their place.
The best time to visit is during the monsoon season when waterfalls flow strongly and vegetation is lush. Paths can become slippery after heavy rain, so appropriate footwear is advisable.
This is the only coffee-growing region in Maharashtra and the sole hill resort in the Vidarbha area. The elevation-based coffee plantations give this place an unusual agricultural character.
