Sirsi is a town in Uttara Kannada District in Karnataka, located among forested hills of the Western Ghats at an elevation of about 600 meters (1,970 feet). The surroundings show tropical rainforests, rivers, and waterfalls that belong to the natural landscape of the region.
The settlement takes its name from the Siris tree, first mentioned in an inscription from 1150 on a hero memorial stone at Tamadi Kallala. The Marikamba Temple was built in 1688 and has since formed the religious center of the town.
The Marikamba Temple celebrations draw visitors from across the region who come to experience traditional dance performances and religious rites. The festival events shape the life of the town for several weeks and fill the streets with music and processions.
National highways connect the town with larger centers in the region, and the nearest railway stations are in Talguppa and Kumta. Visitors reach the surroundings best during the dry season when roads to waterfalls and forests are easily passable.
The area produces areca nuts with recognized geographical indication status that differ from other varieties in shape and texture. Local traders sell these nuts in the markets of the town and in surrounding villages.
